More than 40 years ago, while a college student, I declared a year filled with “HAPPY DAYS.” My school papers, letters, and even my checks were dated by Happy Days rather than the actual date. For example, February 12th was Happy Day #43, and so on. My classmates liked the idea, so several of them began following suit. I was writing to several missionaries at the time as well as my pen-pal and grandparents so, after explaining my quest, they also joined in and spread the plan to others. Before long I had family, friends, and strangers far and wide participating in the Happy Day crusade. Sadly, after several months I declared a SAD day and the journey came to abrupt halt.
In this New Year there are a lot of things I would like to accomplish and improvements I hope to see in my life. Most of all, however, I want to be HAPPY every day. I know that not every moment will be joyful, but in spite of trials and troubles there is no reason I cannot remain happy.
I like something I read the other day, which are Five Simple Rules for Happiness:
1. Free your heart from hatred
2. Free your mind from worries
3. Live simply
4. Give more
5. Expect less
This year I hope to look beyond my imperfections and cherish the woman I am.
If I end up on a detour, I hope to enjoy the scenery.
I look forward to rejoicing in the gifts I am given daily and hope to give thanks often.
Joseph Smith taught,
“Happiness is the object and design of our existence …”
and Nephi declared
“…men are that they might have joy.”
That’s all I really want.
HAPPY 2012!
